TROPHY PHOTOS

Brian Hennefeld
Luck of the draw for one Iowa bowhunter

NAME: Brian Hennefeld

WHERE FROM: Knoxville, Iowa

HARVESTED: Clark County, Iowa

TYPE OF FIREARM OR BOW USED: 1100 12 gage, Federal Premium Slug

SPECIES TYPE: Whitetail

SIZE AND WEIGHT: 13 points, 200 gross antler score , 250 lbs or so on the hoof

DESCRIPTION: Three of us had been chosen to attempt to block a quarter mile of fence while four drivers push deer to us in some of the thickest timber and brush in the county. Inside the timber visibility is measured in feet. I could see a small clearing just inside the timber from a hole in the canopy. I sat on a rise looking into that clearing 40 yards from the fence. After awhile I saw a buck ghost through that clearing and disappear behind a dead fall. I knew that a crossing in the fence was ahead of him so I put my elbows on my knees and centered my rifle sights on the crossing. After 20 seconds or so he jumped into my sight picture. He turned his head to look at my partner 1/8th mile away and I got too good a look at the huge rack. I snapped off 2 shots and missed him standing. He started up the hill to my right and would pass broadside at 50 yards. Problem, my partner was down range as he went by so I held my shot until he was past him and behind me. My first shot caught him in the hips, second through the shoulders and the last was in his huge neck for the finisher. I was shaking and unable to talk for several minutes. He is the biggest ever taken by this group, and my once in a lifetime buck.
