Tim Adam
Michigan hunter harvests a rare gray turkey

NAME: Tim Adam

WHERE FROM: Lansing, Michigan

HARVESTED: Ashley, Michigan

TYPE OF FIREARM OR BOW USED: Remington 870 12 Gauge

SPECIES TYPE: Gray Turkey

SIZE AND WEIGHT: 1 Inch Spurs, 10 9/16 Inch Beard, Weight Unknown

DESCRIPTION: I saw the turkey in the field the day before I got him and thought at first that it was a cardboard box blowing across the field. It wasn't until I got closer to it that I realized that it was a gray turkey in full strut. I tried that night to get him to come in but was unable to. The next morning, I set up and was able to call him in. He came in to my decoys, which were out about 18 yards. One shot from the Remington 870 put him down. I had never seen a gray turkey before. I found out from the taxidermist that they are about one in 2500. Because of this information and the fact that it was my first turkey, I had the turkey mounted in this flying position. As a result of the beard and spur length, it also qualified for the commemorative bucks of Michigan magazine.
