Thorlo Hunting Socks
By Daryl Carson
The Thorlo approach to sock making is to customize each design to its intended activity. For hunters, the company has developed both cold and warm weather mid-calf socks. Using different fibers and different weaves for different areas of the foot, this sock does what it's supposed to do in all locations. The heel and ball sections are thicker and offer great padding. The instep is made of a lower density fiber and snugs closer to the foot for support. The heel pad is extended up to protect from abrasion, and a new cuff design is both comfortable and completely secure.
Of course, moisture management is key in any sock, and here the Thorlos really shine. The company's own brand of acrylic, wool and silk blends suck moisture away from the skin with great efficiency. I know because I hunted with both versions of this sock all of last fall, using them in rubber boots and leather boots. After hiking miles of hills in rubber boots, I came away with not one blister. And, after hours in tree stands, my feet were the warmest they've ever been. Suggested retail: $15.99. 888/846-7567, www.thorlo.com
