New for 2006: Rifles that Roar
Remington
Right at press time we got word that Remington is dropping the Model Seven LS centerfire line in favor a redesigned Model Seven CDL, capitalizing on the success of the Model 700 CDL that came out a few years ago. The rifle features a classic-style, A-grade walnut stock with R3 recoil pad. Metal is satin blue, and the barrel is clean. It will be available in a variety of short-action chamberings from .204 Ruger to .350 Rem. Mag. and including, notably, two WSM chamberings: the .300 and .270.
The Model 7400 semi-auto has been cashiered in favor of the new Model 750 Woodsmaster. The autoloader offers an improved gas system, redesigned fore-end and a new stock design. Its magazine box is interchangeable with the Model 7400's. Available in rifle and carbine configurations, the Model 750 is chambered to .243, .308, .270 Win., .30-06 and .35 Whelen.

Ruger continues its trend of "compacting" its classics with the 10/22 Compact, a 161/2-inch-barreled version of the rimfire favorite.

Weatherby
Weatherby's new Mark V Ultramark bridges the gap between the Mark V Deluxe and a custom-built rifle. It features a high-gloss Monte Carlo stock, 20-lpi checkering and double maplewood spacers on the buttstock, fore-end and pistol-grip gap. This high-luster blued sporter comes in .257 Wby. Winchester
The big news from Winchester is the Super X Rifle, a gas-operated autoloader that is chambered in .270 WSM, .300 WSM, .30-06 and .300 Win. Mag. It features a detachable magazine, removable trigger assembly, alloy receiver, hammer-forged barrel and satin-finished walnut stock.

There are now some interesting additions to the Model 94 lever-action line. The Model 94 Short Hunter Takedown features an 18-inch barrel, full-length magazine and ghost-ring sights. It's available in .450 Marlin, .44 Mag. and .30-30. Our editor got a look at this one recently as well. Takedown is as quick and easy as you could ask, and housed in its accompanying carry case, it will make a great camp gun.

So will the Model 94 Timber Scout Takedown, which comes with a rail base to accept a long-eye-relief scope with QD mounts--although it, too, comes with ghost-ring iron sights. It's available in .30-30, .44 Mag. and .450 Marlin and has a barrel length of 18 inches.
