Could 'Spider Bull' Be New Elk World Record?

Once in a while, a super-sized big-game animal comes along and stops you in your tracks.
Idaho hunter Denny Austad has reportedly killed one of those once-in-a-lifetime game animals, a huge bull elk from central Utah. It just might be the new world-record Rocky Mountain elk.
Austad paid for the Utah Governor's Tag and was guided by MossBack Outfitters to the public-land giant on Sept. 30, 2008.
"The reality still hasn't set in," said Brandon Verde of MossBack Outfitters.
The outfitter calls the huge elk "Spider Bull" because of the way the tines come out from the center of the rack like a spider's legs.
And what a rack it is!
It reportedly green scores 500 4/8 Boone and Crockett Club non-typical gross points. The net score is reportedly 488 inches.
The current world-record non-typical is a 465 2/8 bull found dead in 1994 at Upper Arrow Lake, British Columbia.
B&C officials said they think Austad's elk may be the real thing. They get many record-book big-game animals from MossBack, and all are appropriately scored, according to the record-keeping organization.
The mandatory drying period will end in late November. We'll keep you posted on the status of this trophy.
